DeSantis did not flip-flop on Ukraine. He slipped on a pool of Ukrainian blood. Regardless of your political party affiliation, calling the war in Ukraine “a territorial dispute” is monstrous. It’s an ugly and nasty denigration of tens of thousands of lost lives, maimed men, and raped and kidnapped women and children.
DeSantis revealed that he will reach for the MTG MAGA ring at all costs… even to basic human decency, let alone the truth.
His flip was no doubt because his party’s biggest funders do not share his idea of American retreat from the world. The Russian narrative on Ukraine, so loudly promulgated by Trump and Carlson is a fringe of the GOP… even if it is growing under the relentless disinformation campaigns unleashed on social media and other Putin outlets.
No sane person can stand on the sidelines on this brutal assault of innocent civilians. One look at a video showing a Russian cruise missile slamming into a Ukrainian apartment building is all anyone needs to see that this is pure evil.
If DeSantis doesn’t get that, he is unfit for any office, let alone the commander in chief’s.
All GOP contenders have a tough job. Navigating policy in the wake of Trumpism means having to embrace the insane while hoping the rest of the GOP, and independents won’t notice. That is a hard act, as DeSantis just learned. Demeaning yourself by filling out a Tucker Carson questionnaire already plummets him deep into the land of irrationality. Climbing back out of that only makes him look foolish as he denies what he already said.
DeSantis is not going to save the GOP from defeat. He will only prolong the agony as he appeals to the base, mistakenly thinking they are the national electorate. They aren’t. The Biden win, the Senate that held, and the very narrow GOP house win prove that the base is what it is: a rural, low-information mob, bent on destruction.
Golf club Republicans may have had enough. In all likelihood someone from that club told Ron he made a huge mistake.
